three things i made recently

three things i made recently the semester just started, but it hardly feels like schools really in session yet. the snows only just turned to rain and weve had two snow days in the last week, which meant lots of indoors time. its kind of nice, really: mario kart in the lounge outside, teasing the hall cats, camping out in the kitchen warmth. everyone raiding the fridges for food. i found a cookie recipe over the weekend thats really working for me (it tastes like autumn), so here it is (mostly based on this betty crocker recipe): INGREDIENTS: 1.5 cups granulated sugar 1.5 cups brown sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 eggs 2 cups cinnamon applesauce 4 cups whole wheat flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 package of semisweet chocolate chips INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Mix the sugars, vanilla, eggs, and applesauce in a big bowl until its homogenous and goopy. Itll be pretty runny. Add the baking soda and salt, then mix in the flour as well. Mix until its all the same color and consistency. Itll be pretty thick. Butter or oil a big baking dish (i use this one  because it comes with a nice lid) and pour the entire thing in. Smooth out the batter until its evenly spread out in the dish. Use a knife to draw a pattern on top if youre feeling fancy. Bake until it passes the chopstick test (when you stab it with a chopstick, the chopstick comes out clean), about 45 minutes. Result looks something like this: (shoutout to my mom, who taught me that you can use applesauce instead of butter so you can feel fancy and healthy too) * * * * * * * over IAP i took a class on software-defined radio taught by MIT Lincoln Lab. normal radios work by taking an incoming signal from an antenna and doing a bunch of fancy signal processing using analog electronics. in software-defined radio, that signal processing is done in software instead of hardware, which makes it easier to prototype lots of different radio systems without building an entirely new radio system every time. thats kind of the boring explanation the more interesting part is that it makes it really easy for you to build radio receivers with a car antenna and a little USB stick called an RTL-SDR  (which i think was originally hacked from a television tuner). it costs about $20, and (with the help of some free software like gnuradio), you can have a working FM radio in about an hour. you can look extra hardcore by displaying the frequency signal as it comes in through the antenna. people have also used these to pick up signals from aircraft transponders and track passing airplanes. (in case you ever wondered what FM radio signals look like) * * * * * * * in the theme of communications systems, im also going to show off my final project for 6.111 (introductory digital systems lab) from last semester. my partner and i made a little communication system that exchanges text messages using an off-the-shelf laser. it does some simple error detection and packet acknowledgement too, so if you block the laser with your hand, the system will wait until the laser connection is unblocked and then finish transmitting the message. pretty cool stuff, and i got to implement some of the things i learned in my favorite technical class at MIT, 16.36 (communication systems and networks). along the way we learned a lot about hardware logic, FPGAs, and verilog. turns out that specifying and building a hardware system from scratch is really really hard. it took a lot of scratch work just to figure out the basic architecture: but of course, super satisfying when we finally got it working. check out our video demo: * * * * * * * heres a picture of my desk: ive been listening to these two songs a lot: shelter porter robinson + madeon venus fly grimes + janelle monáe ive been thinking about my social responsibilities as an engineer in the twenty-first century, reflecting on kate crawfords letter to silicon valley (not fiction) and gideon lichfields democracy 3.0 (fiction) i went to a play a few weeks ago at the wellesley repertory theatre  called Emilie: La Marquise Du Châtelet Defends Her Life Tonight. emilie du châtelet was a french physicist and philosopher who is generally credited for fleshing out the idea of kinetic energy in newtonian mechanics. she was also the first woman published by the paris academy (for a paper on the nature of fire), and her translation of newtons principia into french is still the standard french translation used today. ive been working on a new arrangement for my a cappella group. i just finished a book on the history of the apollo missions  (written by an mit professor). i just started reading a compilation of essays about media infrastructures, edited by nicole starosielski and lisa parks (who is one of the new professors in the MIT CMS department). im thinking about these pictures of the internet  as i read. i watched a gorgeous animated film called the secret of kells. i went to ihop with a friend, and to taiwan cafe with some other friends, and a little while before that i celebrated chinese new year with a lot of my friends: (kitchen graciously provided by the brothers of sigep dumpling recipe previously documented here) and the semester just started, and the snows only just turned to rain, and i hear people talking in the lounge outside. Pavel lay in the frost frozen. The frost spitting and eating away at the skin on his face and hands. Too dangerous to move. The scent of waffles wafting through the air making his stomach really churn. With the wire cutters in his hands, which were buried at least a foot into the snow just waiting†¦ All it needs is a few snips and there’s a whole in the thick barbed wire. He lay there watching as the guards threw away their cigarettes. He had precisely 3mins to get out of the camp to a small amount of safety. He knew that he would only be safe once he had crossed the border. Pavel had no idea what date it was, he could only tell that it was probably about 7:00 for the sun had set along time ago. Now was his only chance. He began cutting away at the wire, panicking. Finally the hole is cut. Crouching low so that he doesn’t give away his silhouette, he slowly moves across an open plain, which goes on for about 75 yards. Once he reached the brush he gets out his secretly hidden map. It is sewn in on a handkerchief, which his Uncle gave him just before he died. He could not see the map. He knew that the direction he was heading in was south which was the general direction he was going in. He could tell that he was going south for the south wall was where the people who were going to be gassed had to line up before being taken away. He had escaped from the direction of the south wall. Pavel is a seventeen-year-old boy. He was born through a Christian family but adopted by a Jewish family about 14 years before the war broke out. They counted him as Jewish even though he had not been circumcised because he was found in a Jewish temple and his records were found of his life and about being adopted. He was straight away sent to the camp in Auschwitz and sentenced to death after a few years of labour. He escaping for it almost time for him to meet his death and he wants to find the rest of his family. He was caught in the church. His family got away. I am frozen with fear now. I had got the main part done which was getting out of the camp. I can’t think what to do. I lay still, huddled up on the ground, just staring out into the night. I started walking when a German sentry walked on to a path directly coming my way. I could tell there was no news of an escape; otherwise these soldiers would be looking a lot more alert. They rifles were slung up on their shoulders and dangling while they were smoking calmly. I waited for them to move past me. I didn’t want to give myself away already. The footsteps died out in a just a matter of seconds. I struggled to get back up and when I did I staggered in the brush along the path in the southern direction. I was walking for about an hour now and had past quite a few machine gun posts. My aim was to get to Hungary, I don’t know how but I was going to do my best. I heard noises and smoke from the chimney of a hut. For a moment a thought it was just drunk soldiers. I crossed the path and came close up to an open window. The soldiers were not drunk. I saw them loading rifles and magazines with bullets and from my faint knowledge of German language they were talking about an escape from Auschwitz. I knew this was I. I waited for the Germans to go. I heard their motorbikes revving up and watched them leave up the windy path. I didn’t have a clue where I. I went close to the light coming out from the window and I took out my handkerchief. I found the area that I was in. I was astonished by how good this map was to me. It had fooled the guards at Auschwitz and now it was going to get me past the border. I realised I sill had around 100 kilometres to go before I reached the border. It sounded a long way. I saw nobody inside the hut. I could see German trench coat near the window and I reached across to grab. A voice suddenly in a gentle tone said, â€Å"Food? † I didn’t reply. I was paralysed with fear and a turned around after a few seconds. Again came the voice of a young man, â€Å"Would you like some food? † I replied, â€Å"You’re Polish? † His accent seemed a bit funny but I assumed he was a decent person. â€Å"Yes†, said the man, â€Å"You have runaway haven’t you. You’re Jewish aren’t you? Would you like some food? † Ignoring the offer I carried on the conversation. † I am. Do you think there is any way I could get to the border quickly? My feet have worn out. I have no shoes. Will the Germans be coming back here? † † They will, but don’t worry your safe here. You must be so tired and cold. You can stay in my cellar; the Germans think this will be the last place someone would stay. I have wine going to the Germans a the border, you might be able to hitch a lift. † I didn’t yet know if I could trust this man and his ideas for me. â€Å"Could I have some food and some shoes? † I asked. I didn’t know who was driving, what if it was a German in disguise and this whole thing was a set up to get me returned back to the camp. The engine started off and the vehicle started moving. I never realised it but there was food in the box. There was some bread and cheese. I thought this was a luxury. The truck had been driving for about half a day. I thought we were lucky because we had not been stopped once. The truck glided gently into a halt and I heard some voices. I heard the driver explaining that we have wine for the officers on the border. The back of the truck opened up. I could see a German officer through the holes in the box. He stepped into the back and opened up a box. I could tell by his face that he was satisfied. He took two bottles and gave thumbs up to somebody. I heard the back door slam and the truck started off again. The driver gave a tap to the wall between the front and back of the truck. I assumed this was my call to get out. I slipped out of the box into the night. I could see the watchtowers and there were lights moving all over the fields. The place was swarming with Germans. I thought this was going to be the last of me. I knew I wasn’t going to make it. I heard the truck go off and I started to make my way out of the area because it could be the centre of attention to the Germans. I was trundling my way through deep snow when I spotted a German post. I avoided it and found my self in the middle of a spotlight. My instincts were just to run. I heard bullet fire. I then got shot in the back. I was just at the barbed wire and I started hacking away at it with my wire cutters. At this moment Pavel was shot in the back of his neck. He carried on cutting through. Eventually a hole was made. Shots were landing all around him from MP40 fire. He jumped through the barbed wire and his ragged trench coat got stuck on the wire. He tried to set himself free and got shot in the back. There was just a little whole in his back but the round exploded in his stomach as it came out. HE carried on trying to set himself free when six German soldiers approached with their rifles locked into their soldiers. Each of them aimed at Pavel and fired. Pavel lay there strewn along the barbed wire. He did not know this but he died two days before his eighteenth birthday and his family had all died in concentration camps. Behaviour Contract

I have always loved to watch movies and television shows but I guess it was an addiction already for the past couple of months. I can say that I am very much hooked in watching the television for the past seven months. I love the thrill, happiness, suspense I feel whenever I watch something on television. Whenever I am at home, my whole day would be spent in front of the television. I sometimes skip meals just to watch my favourite movie or a certain talk show.Sometimes I even do not take a bath just to keep track of what I am watching. I love watching those shows that exposes the current fashion, recent social issues, and television magazines, shows that tells Hollywood celebrities’ lives and most of all, movies like suspense thriller, horror, love stories and fairy tales. For me it is the source of my enjoyment, I sometimes forget to study and read books. I think too much watching the television causes great effects in my being. I think being bored triggers my addiction to t elevision.I want something to entertain me so that I do not get too alone. Sometimes I get bored just studying and doing other things, but when it comes to television, I really can’t feel ennui at all. I really feel entertain by the television. I should control my being hooked on television and might as well eliminate it. I should discipline myself and have self control. Within 2 weeks I should minimize my television viewing and by the end of month I must have eliminated this behaviour already.If I spend too much of my time in front of the television then I will ask my mother to deduct my allowance by 50%, I will not be able to go on a night out during Fridays, I will not be allowed to wake up late during weekends, lastly I will not be able to go out with my friends during week ends.If I will not comply with the contract then my punishment for myself will be destroy all my shoes and sandals and I will come to school on slippers for one day. While if I will be able to follow a ll the terms in the contract and comply with it then I my reward will be, spending the whole weekend in my favourite beach resort and hotel.

Method Participants The ideal sample is 150 participants between the ages of 50-80 years old with both male and females equally represented, all of whom suffer from and have been diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease, other forms of dementia, or Parkinson s disease according to the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [DSM-5]. The selected participants will have volunteered for the study or were referred by physicians and caregivers, and come from multiple nursing homes. The probability sampling method, random sampling, will be used to ensure that the sample chosen represents the population and will be a method that will be easy to support and defend. Research Design A multi-centered†¦show more content†¦Mood will be operationalized by Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, scoring will range from 0 to 38 with higher scores indicating more severe depression. Quality of life will be operationalized by The World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire 100 (WHOQOL-100, or the Quality of Life-Alzheimer s Disease assessment (QOL-AD) for those with Alzheimer s disease. Scoring will be from 13 to 52; higher scores will suggest better quality of life. Geriatric disorders are operationally defined by the diagnoses of either dementia, Alzheimer s disease, or Parkinson s disease and The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). DMT is operationally defined by the one hour sessions of dance/movement therapy with a DMT licensed therapist. Since the experiment will be conducted in a more natural conditions, there will be a stronger external validity. However, a potential threat to external validity could arise through the gen eralizability of the study; if the study will have similar results throughout the geriatric disorder population. Internal validity could be threatened due to not being conducted in a laboratory, which loses the direct control of the participants. The participants could be doing other activities or factors that are contributing to the results, in which case it would be difficult to measure if DMT is solely the cause of the results shown in the participants.
